The Big Draft is a voluntary association of student authors that collects and publishes essays with political, economic, social and journalistic content. The essays often have an urban youth focus and they aim to provide comments by the youth on the recent re-emergence of their generation as an important player within politics in South Africa and internationally.
For those of you who may still be in doubt about the resurgence of youth political activism, here are a few points you may wish to consider: In South Africa the ANC Youth League‘s recent escapades have changed the country’s political landscape (for better or worse), not least because it is from amidst the turmoil around the Youth league that the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has emerged as a formidible political force. Meanwhile, in the US, the Occupy Movement created an unprecedented global consciousness around the excesses of contemporary capitalism; and, finally, the sea of change that has engulfed the middle east, known as the Arab Spring, is perhaps the epitome of youth led political change. There have been very few times in contemorary history when it has been most important to document the thoughts of young people and to hear their ideas on politics, society and the economy, since recent events have shown that the youth are by no means only passive recipients of what ever actions are taken by the rest of society. They are in fact key political actors.
